This book is really big at my school right now. The programs in this book are easy to program and good for two situations:
1) The formulas you never remember -- for me this includes distance formula, quadratic formula, how to find an equation of a line when given two points, etc.
2) The formulas you know, but want to save time on (or are afraid you'll mess up since you're rushing) --for me, this includes things like Pythagorean Theorem, area of a circle, circumference of a circle, etc. They also show how to store a formula 'cheat sheet' which I used to store other things I need for reference, like SOHCAHTOA, equation of a circle, etc.
A few tips about these programs:
1) While the authors tell you to replace the batteries before you program the calculator (so you don't lose the data during the battery change), they are just covering their butts. I am a fan of Advantage Point's other products (particularly Boost Your Score! The Unofficial Software Guide to the Real ACT) so I purchased this book as soon as it came out. I have been an independent ACT tutor for over ten years and I didn't know what to expect with this book.
I have to say I am impressed and actually, a little disturbed. There is no question that this booklet will increase a student's score. Basically, this packet explains how to program a TI calculator to answer many questions on the ACT without having to do much work. The authors actually give examples with real ACT questions. (I also use the Real ACT Prep Guide with my students and this booklet also tells you which questions in that book can be solved easily with each program, so it's all very concrete.) I purchased this book hoping to raise my score and not feel as rushed during the ACT. Basically how this book works is that it tells you how to program certain things into your calculator such as the Pythagriam Theorem and the Distance Formula. It gives you step by step instructions in how to program the formulas into yoru calculator. Then, you just select the program and enter the numbers and then bam! it gives you the answer. (I know it sounds like magic and unreal, but once you get the book and try it out you'll understand what I mean). This is completely legal on the ACT and I'm surprised that not everyone programs formulas into their calculators. This book was very small though and only offered a limited amount of useful programs. It also shares a few calculator tips you may not have known, but most of those are self explanatory. I found about 7 of them useful. But I find them EXTREMELY useful. The programs have really helped me save at least 4 minutes (which is a lot on the ACT)...Read more
