Summary: Helped Me Pass 2008-08-20
Comment: I do not have a science background and had a vague memory of Biology while studying for the CLEP using this book. I barely passed the test. Good enough. There is another earlier post that has a link to a community college in AZ and that link was very helpful.

Summary: Do Not Even Bother 2008-08-03
Comment: The front of the book states: "Based on offical exam questions released by the College Board."
Well, that's misleading. I took the exam August 2008; twenty percent of the exam was on material in the book.
The front also says: "Target review of all exam topics." There were several questions in a row with a lab as a model, as well as topics not covered in the book including HIV, vaccines, etc.
It is not, as the front of the book states, "The best test preparation for the CLEP Biology." Studying the book was a major waste of time. As you can tell, I didn't pass the exam. Came close, but didn't pass it due to the questions that came from left field. CLEP will also get a letter of complaint. Do not get this book! A waste of money.

Summary: It works, even though you don't quite realize it 2008-05-22
Comment: I just returned from my 1st CLEP test several hours ago, and I can gladly say that I passed with a 71.

After not touching biology for about 4 years, I studied the subject for 3 weeks before diving in and taking the test. In conjunction with this, I used an old (2003) textbook I bought on Ebay for about $8.

At first I read straight through the REA book. Then I took the first test as a diagnostic, then I read relevant material in the text and took the 2nd test. Finally I went and took notes on the REA book and took the final test. My scores were 67/64/70 respectively.

Honestly, going into the test, I felt as though I wasn't prepared whatsoever. I had read all of the reviews saying that the practice tests were too easy and did not prepare you very well for the real thing. That made me a little uneasy, but I went for it anyway.

I was surprised by how much of the information covered in the book was on the test. Certainly there was still a lot of educated guessing, but if you use a little intuition you'll breeze through. The analysis section is definitely tolerable.

I suggest you focus on knowing thoroughly the information in this book, and then skimming through a textbook to pick up a few of the minute details.

Now it's on to the next CLEP test!

Summary: Good coverage of material 2008-05-17
Comment: This guide provided a very good overview of the material for the exam. I used it, in conjunction with Science Terms Made Easy: A Lexicon of Scientific Words and Their Root Language Origins to master vocabulary, and fared very well on the exam.
The sample exams give good practice, but I found the level of difficulty to be a bit lower than that of the actual exam.
Overall, this is a worthwhile buy.

Summary: Do not waste your money, buy a textbook instead! 2008-05-05
Comment: If I could give this book 0 stars I would. I failed this exam with a 48 and I'm an honors student. If you rely on this book, you will find that you wasted your time and better plan on guessing 1/2 the answers. This book is way too general to be considered "the best study guide". I studied this book for hours and hours over the course of 2 months. I spent every night and weekends home studying. I knew the information in this book inside and out, but the book is not representative of the actual exam. The exam asks you to apply the information in the book to experiments. The exam does not use general terms, it uses much more specific terms. For example "after your food leaves the stomach, where does it go next"? You might think small intestine, right? When your options are duodenum, jejunem, or ileum, you better know which is which. And that's one I got right! Punnet squares are based on the F1 and F2 generation, etc. There were maybe 8 questions that were similar to the 330 in this book. That's okay because the CollegeBoard book is just as useless. You need a TEXTBOOK for this exam.
