Sooo Easy,

This review is from: Fiske WordPower (Paperback)
This book is probably the easiest most organized vocabulary building book ever. I bought this book looking to improve my vocabulary for business school. I found much more. This book organized words into groups that are funny. Some Word Groups:
-Scary Things(anathema, specter, juggernaut, apocalypse)
-Don't Yell at Me(diatribe, invective, vituperation, admonish)
-Have Mercy(clemency, exonerate, absolve)
The word groups help remembering the words very easy. It is an outrageous, witty, humorous guide to building vocabulary.
Poor for Word Power, but Fun to Browse,

SUMMARY

In a phrase, "This book is interesting to browse, but it doesn't give you a 'powerful' vocabulary". Basically, I keep this book by my toilet. It's entertaining to browse through, but most of the words it offers up are either too common (meaning the average high schooler would probably know them) or too obscure (meaning that they would never be used outside of, well, a book purporting that it'll help build a 'powerful' vocabulary).

My Expectations:
I'm an essay editor and tutor. My main concentration these days appears to be papers in the sciences, but, in the past, I did a lot of editing and tutoring in Creative Writing, Philosophy, and English. I've worked with students ranging from Grade 10 to university grad studies. I'm constantly looking for books to both show to my students and to amuse myself with. I picked up Fiske WordPower during a trip to America (I'm from Canada) because I thought it might be a good way to...Read more

The earlier chapters of Fiske, I really enjoyed. All of the chapters are split up and pertain to a category. But as you progress through the book, instead of introducing a variety of words, it just opts to give you synonyms and antonyms, which is kind of a bad idea for a vocabulary book, since words in other vocabulary building books will provide a list of them adjunct following the word. Though, there are mini-quizzes at the end of 3 chapters (3 10 set chapters). And there is a little read about parts of speech that is pretty helpful. For example, there is one about when to use lie, lay, lied, lying correctly. For under 10 dollars, it's not an awful buy, and i'd recommend getting it for an easy intro into "building your word power."
