I am returning to grad school next year after a long hiatus from any kind of formal education (I received my undergraduate degree in 1991) so although I generally have been pretty successful with standardized tests, I was a little nervous about the GRE, in particular about the quantitative analysis portion. I haven't had a math class in over 25 years, since I majored in literature and communications as an undergrad, and was in an honors curriculum which allowed me write papers about math instead of taking a "real" math class.
I took the revised GRE a few weeks ago, so I haven't received my official scores yet, but the range estimates I was given after completing the test were numbers I was happy with (750-800 verbal, 710-800 quantitative). I won't have the official scores until November. These numbers were fairly close to the practice score numbers I got taking the official ETS sample test, and a bit higher than the practice scores I got taking the Kaplan practice...Read more

I am very familiar with Dr. Gruber's SAT and ACT books, having used them with great success. I was very glad to see his new GRE book and have finished about ¾ of the book. I have taken the first GRE practice test and was so happy to see how much I've improved in every area, from the official GRE test which was on the GRE website. The strategies and review material are exceptional. I have used other GRE books in the past before Dr. Gruber wrote this book but was disheartened with the other books. This new book has gotten my self-esteem for this test much higher, and I now know how to answer questions on the new GRE through Gruber's outstanding techniques. The only thing in the book you don't need so much is the 3400 word vocabulary builder Gruber provides. I think his Prefix-Root list which gives you definitions of hundreds of thousands of words, and his great vocabulary strategies would suffice. All in all, this book provides a great tool for preparation for the new GRE. I really...Read more

This was a great study guide. It has plenty of refresher material for the math sections, as well as wonderful guides for verbal enhancement. I was a little worried about purchasing this guide (and all I could hear was the McGruber SNL skit music in my head), but have found that it has been very helpful.
That being said, I did also purchase the Princeton's Crash Course study guide and found their answering strategies a little more helpful, whereas Gruber's guide focusing learning more efficient answering or problem solving solutions. Overall, I wish I had had this guide a little sooner so that I could complete all the practice tests (3 full GRE tests total, plus tons of practice drills).
