Acceptance by a top college is more than a gold star on a high school graduate’s forehead today. It has morphed into the ultimate "good parenting" stamp of approval--the better the bumper sticker, the better the parent, right? Parents of juniors and seniors in high school fret over SAT scores and essays, obsessed with getting their kids into the right college, while their children push for independence.
I'm Going to College---Not You! is a resource for parents, written by parents who’ve been in their shoes. Kenyon College dean Jennifer Delahunty shares her unique perspective (and her daughter’s) on one of the toughest periods of parenting, and has assembled a top-notch group of writers that includes best-selling authors, college professors and admissions directors, and journalists. Their experiences with the difficult balancing act between control freak and resource answer questions like:
--how can a parent be less of a "helicopter" (hovering) and more of a "booster rocket" (uplifting)?
--what do you do when your child wants to put off college to become a rock star?
and
--how will you keep from wanting to kill each other?

This review is from: I'm Going to College---Not You!: Surviving the College Search with Your Child (Kindle Edition) I gradually became a stressed out and nervous parent from this crazy college admissions process and needed some relief. This book was the perfect medicine - it really calmed me down and made me laugh out loud! Told from many points of view, these stories are just so right-on - you can really relate and get some insight from other perspectives. Makes you realize you are not alone and how silly and unproductive some of your concerns really are. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: By Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: I'm Going to College---Not You!: Surviving the College Search with Your Child (Paperback) Dean Delahunty speaks the truth. Maybe it resonates more because I have two daughters. More importantly, I, too, am in the admission field and have met all of the persona portrayed in these well-written vignettes. Parents need to be confident that their first 17 years of raising their children should be a sufficient platform from which their progeny can take flight. For those moms and dads who have not yet let junior leave the nest even briefly, the college search process becomes more about them than the child, and this sad to watch.
Thank you to the writiers and for Ms Delahunty for cajoling them into sharing their stories. School counselors should keep this book in plain view in their offices. |
