CONTENTS OF BOOK: PART ONE: PSAT Basics (pages 4-12) pretty much just gives the basic information on the 5 sections of the PSAT (i.e. critical reading 25 minutes, math 25 minutes, critical reading 25 minutes, math 25 minutes, and writing 30 minutes). I did not find the section any more helpful than if I would have performed a simple Google search on the PSAT. PART TWO: Diagnostic Test (pages 17-48) was also only somewhat helpful. I really could not tell how the section differed from the SAT Kaplan 2011 book. Of course, the explanations to the diagnostic test (pages 50-66) were helpful but again, I would recommend you purchase the SAT 2011 preparatory book from Kaplan, instead. It also contains explanations to the questions on the practice tests. PART THREE: PSAT Strategies Chapter 1: How to Attack the Critical Reading Sections (pages 69-110) contains very similar information to the SAT Kaplan 2011. Chapter 2: How...Read more 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful: By This review is from: Kaplan PSAT/NMSQT 2011 Premier (Paperback) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?) This is a 480-page book from an established company, Kaplan. The format is large: 8.5 inches by 11 inches. While the cover is glossy, all of the pages inside are printed on inexpensive off-white paper. The book comes with a PASSWORD, for use in accessing an on-line course.
This is a workbook. The purpose is to provide practice exams and self-imposed drills to students. The pages are for writing on, and for taking notes. Once the student has taken the PSAT test, or the SAT test, the workbook can be discarded, or handed down to a younger student. The book has these parts: (1) PSAT basics; (2) Diagnostic test; (3) PSAT strategies; (4) Mathematics; (5) Writing test; (6) How to prepare for the test day; (7) Practice test 1; (8) Practice test 2; (9) Practice test 3; (10) Compute your score; and (11) PSAT resources. The book is, in part, a teacher. For example, page 169-173 show various kinds of verb tense errors, an error called "collective...Read more 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful: This review is from: Kaplan PSAT/NMSQT 2011 Premier (Paperback) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?) I tutor a lot of students who are preparing for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, and therefore read (and use) a lot of test preparation books. This series is always popular with the students (they usually have the book before our first meeting), perhaps in part because its sheer size implies that it must contain everything you need to know.
I'm only mildly impressed with the book, but have been using it anyway. The practice tests are nice, though students usually tell me that the real test was "nothing like" the practice tests. I find the explanatory material to be lacking, specially in the math section. All of that being said, I think the book is useful to students who are studying on their own or with a tutor. Practice makes perfect (especially with something like the PSAT, which is different from anything a student has likely taken before, and which has such high stakes as the basis for the NMSQT), and this book provides lots of practice. A student...Read more |
