Amazon.com Review

You've heard that performing well on your ACT can make up for mediocre performance in high school. But how can you ace it? Suzee Vlk, author of The SAT I for Dummies, can help. The ACT for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 19 hours to work through it), review chapters for all four sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Cheat Sheet" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with 10 things colleges are looking for in their applicants and "Ten Dumb Things You Can Do to Mess Up Your ACT." With its witty writing, clear layout, and helpful icons in the margins to point out tips, tricks, and traps in the exam, and sample questions, The ACT for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C.B. Product Description

There's no escaping the ACT. Many colleges require that you suffer through the ordeal of taking this entrance exam before they will even look at your application. Some colleges emphasize ACT scores to compensate for grade inflation; that is, some high schools may give students A's for doing the same level work that would gain them C's in other high schools. Because the ACT is the same for everyone (students nationwide take the exact same exam), colleges use ACT scores to get inside your head to see what's really in there. Think of this as an opportunity, not a crisis – after all, good ACT scores can overcome low GPAs.

No matter how good your high school teachers are, their main goal is to prepare you for the real world – and not the world of the ACT. That's where The ACT For Dummies, 3rd Edition, takes over. Newly revised for the latest version of the exam, this book takes a substantive, but easy-to-understand, approach to helping you prepare for the exam, while at the same time presenting its information in the typical Dummies style – with humor and fun. If anything can make preparing for the ACT enjoyable, this book can.

Here's a sampling of what you'll find in The ACT For Dummies, 3rd Edition:

  • An overview of the test: Understanding the format and how the scoring works
  • Stress-busters: How to survive exam day
  • Things to double-check and things to avoid while taking the test
  • Reviews of grammar and spelling, algebra and geometry, reading, and science reasoning
  • Plenty of practice questions for all parts of the test
  • Three full-length ACT practice tests (no, not the real thing!)
  • Top Ten lists debunking ACT rumors, differences between the ACT and SAT, and true ACT stories

You know you have to take the ACT seriously; after all, it can determine the college you go to, which will, in turn, affect the rest of your life. (Talk about pressure!) So why not be prepared? With The ACT For Dummies, 3rd Edition, you'll be as prepared for the exam as anyone can be, and you may just have a little fun in the process.

Summary: Great Math Review 2009-01-08
Comment: I bought this book because of its ratings on Amazon, its a great catch up but its not what you need if you want to get a really high score on the ACT. I used this book primarily for its geometry review because it was the only part of the ACT I did not do really well in. The book help mego from a 20 Math Composite score to a 23, so it helped very much. I also used The Real ACT book and I found it to be much more helpful then this book. but if you need a good review from what you learned in high school this is the book for you but as far as getting higher than a 23 this is not the book for you.

Summary: A Good ACT Material 2009-01-06
Comment: This book was helpful to study with for my ACT. It gave basic, yet through tips on what the ACT covers, and it has some humor along the way. Also there are tests with answers and the reason that answer is right, which is very helpful. For the price, why not try it? My ACT actually improved 2 points..

Summary: Spend your time and money on a better ACT book 2008-11-01
Comment: I bought this book as it had exceptional ratings on Amazon. I used this book along with the Real ACT book, the McGraw Hill 10 Practice Tests, and Sparknotes Guide to the ACT. I found that this book was the least helpful. Many strategies they give you are intuitive; for example, spend more time on more difficult questions, pace yourself, etc. Also, most of the grammar taught in the book is nowhere to be found on a real ACT. But I have to admit that the jokes made the book more enjoyable. With the other prep books, after a certain amount of time, I would be exhausted. But with the Dummies ACT book, I sat in the chair studying the book for a longer period of time since the jokes made the subject matter more entertaining. I would have to say that this book is for those who plan to score a 26 or less. This book will not help an overachieving scorer as the information it gives is intuitive. The worst part of all were the practice tests as they were far from the same content on the real ACT.

In conclusion, this book's ratings are attributed to its humor, not to its actual ACT content. I would recommend buying a different book.

Summary: Great Buy! 2008-10-26
Comment: I absolutely loved this book! It was worth the money that i paid for it. I just took the ACT yesterday, and this book helped me out tons! This book is great for those of us who needs a review that is to the point. It actually gives you a review (it tells you how to actually work the problems) that is straight and to the point. I loved this book. I highly recommend it to those who are looking for a study guide for the ACT. This helped me so much on the test.

Summary: What you see is what you get 2008-08-29
Comment: Great book for people who don't speak "intelligent" 24/7! I feel it is comprehensive and helps you study. There is light humor to keep you awake and take interest in studying for a big test. I will take the test Sept. 14th, so hopefully all goes well!
